This programme provides a practical introduction to Lean Thinking concepts, tools and techniques. The content is ideal for both private and public organisations and is especially relevant to office and service activities. Interestingly, our experience shows that the opportunity for Lean Thinking activity in the back-office of manufacturing companies is often overlooked, even though the approach may have been long established on the shop floor.

The programme sets the scene and context of Lean Thinking before briefly introducing some background to Six Sigma and the emergence of Lean Six Sigma.

Although the clear focus of the programme is on Lean, the content includes some specific elements of Lean Six Sigma, in particular, the use of DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control), the commonly used method to improve existing processes.

The framework of the programme is based around these seven key principles:

  • Focus on the customer
  • Identify and understand how the work gets done – the value stream
  • Manage, improve, and smooth the process flow
  • Remove Non-Value-Add (NVA) steps and waste
  • Manage by fact and reduce variation
  • Involve and equip the people in the process
  • Undertake improvement activity in a systematic way

The course introduces a range of tools and techniques as detailed in the course outline .pdf. They are covered in varying degrees with practical exercises ideally focusing on the participants’ real work place issues.

Most of the tools and techniques covered in the programme can be found in the Go Lean book and complementary pocket guide that are part of the supporting training materials.
