Value Stream Mapping
Most improvement efforts focus on individual steps. Value Stream Mapping pulls the lens back to reveal the whole system – how work flows from end to end, where value is created, and where time, effort and resource are quietly being lost.
Introduction
A value stream is the complete sequence of activities required to deliver a product or service to a customer, from the initial request or raw material through to the finished outcome. A Value Stream Map (VSM) is a visual representation of that flow, capturing both the movement of materials or work and the information that drives it, along with key process data that reveals where the system is performing, and where it isn’t.
This practical programme shows you how to build that picture, analyse it honestly, and use it to design a future state that delivers better performance, shorter cycle times and genuine flow across the whole process. Delivered in a virtual workshop style, it blends teaching, discussion and hands-on application – and suits anyone who wants to use VSM as a strategic and transformational tool, not just a documentation exercise.
Participants will be able to:
- Explain what Value Stream Mapping is and how it fits with Continuous Improvement and Lean
- Apply Value Stream Mapping to engage leadership in strategic, transformational change
- Map the current state to understand end-to-end work systems and the barriers to delivering value
- Analyse value-add and non-value-add steps to identify and prioritise improvement opportunities
- Design a future state that enables excellent performance across the whole process
- Plan implementation, write Project Charters and support and eventually lead projects to improve the value stream

The programme is recognised with 16 CPD points.
Delivery Information / Options
The programme is delivered as an in-company course, on-site or virtually, in a lively, interactive workshop style tailored to your objectives. It typically runs over one to two days, consecutively or spread across half-day sessions.
Course Overview
The programme moves through five connected stages: grounding delegates in Lean principles and preparing for a mapping activity; building an accurate current state map that captures customer demand, material and information flows, and process data; analysing value-add and non-value-add activity to expose waste and prioritise opportunities; designing a future state with assessed improvement impact; and finally planning implementation – sequencing activities, choosing improvement tactics such as Kaizen, DMAIC or digitisation, and addressing the change management needed to make the new way of working stick.
