We need to embed lean ways of working and develop a lean culture
Embedding Lean ways of working means building the habits, behaviours and management systems that enable people at every level to identify waste, solve problems, improve flow and focus on customer value. Rather than relying on isolated improvement activities, Lean becomes part of how work is managed and improved every day.
Achieving this requires a shared understanding of Lean principles, competence across teams, and the routines that make improvement a natural part of daily work rather than something separate from it.
When it’s missing, organisations often make some progress with Lean activities but struggle to sustain the efforts. Good ideas dry up, momentum slows, and Lean is experienced as a short-term initiative rather than a lasting way of working.
Common symptoms
When Lean ways of working are not yet embedded, organisations often stay busy and well-intentioned but do not achieve the consistency, clarity or cultural shift needed for lasting improvement. Challenges include:
- Improvement activity happening in pockets rather than becoming organisation-wide
- Lean tools being used occasionally, but not as part of daily management and decision-making
- Waste, delays and bottlenecks remaining hidden or tolerated as normal
- Teams finding it difficult to sustain gains once an improvement initiative ends
- Leaders wanting a Lean culture, but not yet having the routines and behaviours to reinforce it
- Limited visibility of performance, priorities and problems at team level
- Inconsistent use of standard work, visual management and daily accountability
- People not always feeling empowered or confident to identify issues and improve how work is done
- Improvement efforts that are not fully connected to customer value, strategic priorities or cross-functional flow
Root causes
Embedding Lean culture usually takes more than training people in a set of tools. It depends on leadership, management systems, practical application and consistent reinforcement over time. Typical barriers include:
- Limited understanding of Lean as a way of thinking, not just a toolkit
- Insufficient leadership behaviours to model and support Lean ways of working
- A lack of daily routines that make performance, problems and priorities visible
- Improvement activity not being linked clearly enough to operational goals and customer value
- Inconsistent application of Lean methods across teams and departments
- Too little focus on engagement, ownership and building problem-solving habits that stick
- Not enough capability within teams to apply methods such as 5S, visual management, standard work and structured problem solving
- Limited cross-functional understanding of how value flows and where barriers to flow exist
Catalyst combines deep Lean expertise with practical delivery experience, helping organisations build the systems, behaviours and capability needed to make Lean part of everyday work.
