Training that Delivers Results: Practical Tips
How to make the most of your investment in training, based on our experience over 30 years.
Practical tips for commissioning training that delivers real results
When you are arranging training for a team or organisation, the foundations for success are laid before the sessions begin. The more clearly the training is linked to your people, your business goals and your day-to-day challenges, the more relevant and worthwhile it will be.
Start with a conversation
Before the training is delivered, talk to us about your organisation, your team and what you want the training to achieve.
This helps us shape the session around your context rather than relying on generic examples. By understanding your priorities, current ways of working and level of experience, we can tailor the content so it feels immediately useful to the people attending.
Be clear about the outcome you want
Training is most effective when there is a clear sense of what success looks like.
You may want to improve confidence, build capability in a specific area, increase productivity, support a change programme, or help teams adopt new tools or ways of working. When those goals are shared in advance, we can design the session to focus on what matters to your team or organisation.
Link the training to real work
The strongest training is grounded in the work your team is actually doing. If possible, identify real projects, processes, challenges or priorities that can be used as a reference point during the session. This makes the learning more relevant and helps participants see how to apply it in practice, rather than treating it as something theoretical or separate from their day-to-day responsibilities.
Share examples from your organisation
Documents, workflows, case studies, scenarios or current business challenges can all help make the training more meaningful.
Using familiar examples allows us to make the content more specific to your environment. It also helps attendees recognise the direct value of the training and makes it easier to turn ideas into action afterwards.
Think carefully about who should attend
Consider who is going to participate, what they already know, and what they need to be able to do afterwards. If the group includes people with different levels of experience, different roles or different learning needs, letting us know in advance allows us to adjust the pace, content and exercises accordingly.
Prepare your team to take part
The best training is interactive, not passive.
Encouraging attendees to ask questions, contribute to discussion and take part in practical exercises will help them get far more from the session. Setting that expectation early can make a real difference, especially if participants are joining with mixed levels of enthusiasm or confidence.
Create the right conditions for learning
Even the best-designed training is less effective if people are distracted, rushed or unable to participate properly.
Make sure attendees have the time, space and support they need to engage fully. For online delivery, this may mean ensuring access to the platform, working audio and video, and protection from interruptions. For in-person sessions, it means creating an environment where people can focus, contribute and take part comfortably.
Be open about challenges
If there are obstacles, concerns or skills gaps within the team, it is helpful to share those before the training takes place.
That gives us the chance to address them directly and shape the session accordingly. Honest conversations at the planning stage usually lead to more relevant training and better outcomes.
Plan for what happens after the session
Training creates the most value when people have the chance to apply what they have learned soon afterwards.
Think about how the learning will be reinforced once the session ends. That might include follow-up conversations, time to practise, opportunities to apply new skills in live work, or internal support from managers and team leads. When training is followed by action, it is far more likely to lead to lasting change.
Why this approach works
Training is rarely most effective as a one-size-fits-all event. It works best when it is connected to your organisation’s goals, tailored to your audience and grounded in real work.
By sharing your objectives, involving us early and preparing your team properly, you help create a training experience that is focused, practical and valuable from the outset.
