We need to build world class improvement and problem solving capability
World-class improvement comes from building improvement capability across the organisation, so people have the skills and support to solve problems and improve performance. It won't come from isolated projects or a handful of specialists.
There is a need to develop the skills, competencies and confidence that improve performance, give people a common language and framework for improvement, and make getting better part of how the organisation thinks, works and learns.
When these elements are absent, improvement becomes much harder than it needs to be. Results are inconsistent, critical steps are overlooked, opportunities are missed, and teams spend more time firefighting than making lasting progress.
Common symptoms
When improvement and problem-solving capability is underdeveloped, individuals, teams and organisations feel busy but do not always see lasting results in return for their improvement efforts. Common challenges include:
- Problems being fixed temporarily rather than permanently resolved
- The same issues re-emerging because root causes have not been addressed
- Decisions being driven by assumptions rather than evidence and data
- Teams using inconsistent approaches to identify, analyse and solve problems
- Too much dependence on a few experienced individuals
- A struggle to define problems clearly, leading to effort being focused on symptoms rather than causes
- Improvement energy that is difficult to replicate or scale across departments and functions
- Good ideas failing to translate into measurable and sustainable outcomes
- Lack of confidence in leading change, embedding new ways of working and sustaining gains
Root causes
Building world class capability usually requires more than delivering a single training course. It depends on the right combination of leadership, culture, methods and practical application. Typical barriers include:
- Limited organisational capability in structured problem solving
- Not developing problem solving capability at the front line
- Inconsistent improvement methods across teams
- A weak connection between training and the actual work being done and the real problems to be solved
- Not enough leadership support for improvement activity
- Insufficient coaching for people leading change or improvement projects
- Improvement approaches that are applied too rigidly, regardless of the situation
- Limited use of data and evidence to inform decisions and prioritise action
- Not enough done to build engagement and acceptance from stakeholders
Catalyst combines world-class improvement expertise with practical delivery experience, helping individuals, teams and organisations develop the skills and confidence needed to solve problems effectively and sustain their results.
